Dan Henderson Is Still Bitter, Expects Showdown With Lyoto Machida On Super Bowl Weekend

Source: MMA Fighting

Three months ago, Dan Henderson was sitting pretty with a title shot against Jon Jones at UFC 151. Then two weeks before his fight, Henderson pulled out with a knee injury which ends up cancelling the card when Jones turned down a short notice fight with Henderson’s friend Chael Sonnen.

Strangely enough, it was Sonnen who got the coaching nod against Jones when–in all honesty–it should have been given to Henderson. Both Henderson and Jones were hurt and would have been on the mend while taping TUF 17. The reality would have given both men a fair advantage in healing time and Henderson legitimately has a claim to the title shot.

But like with all things, MMA is also a business. Sonnen was needed to save TUF and its ratings. Its a smart move for the UFC. Henderson, though, believes its a bad move for the sport. Remember though, the UFC is a business first and foremost. So that leaves Henderson to take a title eliminator fight against Lyoto Machida early next year.

According to Henderson, the fight could be the main event on the UFC’s annual Super Bowl card which takes place February 2. There is no official word yet from the UFC which seems strange considering both men are expecting to face each other. Henderson did reveal his knee is still not 100% which could be holding up the announcement.

Wanderlei Silva Moving Up To Light Heavyweight In 2013

Wanderlei Silva Moving Up To Light Heavyweight In 2013

Source: Sherdog

Wanderlei Silva is nearing the end of his illustrious career. But he isn’t done yet. Silva showed some semblance of his old self in his last fight against Rich Franklin at UFC 147 this past June which prompted the UFC to keep Silva around. Silva though says he won’t be staying at middleweight, he will be moving to light heavyweight.

The move is understandable due to Silva’s old age. Once you get to a certain age, its hard to make the weight cut. I think Jon Jones will have that problem eventually. But for now, its Wanderlei Silva. The problem is Silva is a natural at middleweight. He is a bit too small for light heavyweight.

Consider Wanderlei fighting guys like Jon Jones, Lyoto Machida, and Rashad Evans. These guys will man handle Silva. Silva doesn’t stand a chance. In addition, his age will be a detriment when he gets in the octagon. One solution I think Silva could do is catchweight fights at 195 lbs if there is a fight that is interesting for him.

There are guys that would take that fight especially if they are considering a drop to middleweight or a move up to light heavyweight and want to fight in between to see how they will handle the move. Think about Rashad Evans wanting to move down but wants to take a fight in between the move. It would work. Otherwise, I think Wanderlei needs to retire because he isn’t competitive anymore.

Rashad Evans Wants Rematch With Lyoto Machida

Rashad Evans Wants Rematch With Lyoto Machida

Source: MMA Mania

Rashad Evans has been out of MMA for so long he is almost forgotten. We haven’t seen him fight since he lost to former friend and training partner Jon Jones back in April of this year. Evans wanted to make a return to the octagon at the end of the year but that likely won’t happen.

Evans had been working with the UFC on getting a fight done this year which fell through. Since his loss to Jones, Evans has not seen any action inside the octagon except for cornering his teammate Vitor Belfort against Jon Jones last month. Evans expects to return to the octagon early next year.

The fight Evans had been hoping for is rematch with Lyoto Machida. The problem is Machida is slated to face Dan Henderson in a title eliminator match. Machida and Henderson are both in Dana White‘s dog house though because they were in part responsible for the fiasco surrounding the cancellation of UFC 151.

With delays in getting the Machida vs Henderson match signed, there could be a small possibility Evans jumps in against one of those guys. In all likelihood, Evans is going to have to sit on the shelf and wait for an opponent worth fighting to materialize. Unless Evans is prepared to take on a smaller name, he will be sitting out a little while longer.

Update 10/24/2012: Rashad Evans will not be getting his rematch. Instead Evans and Lil Nog have verbally agreed to fight on the UFC’s annual Super Bowl card on February 2. There is no official word on whether the event will be called UFC 157. That means Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson will probably be throwing down early next year although it is strange we have not heard a fight announcement yet.

Anderson Silva Warming Up To Jon Jones Fight

Anderson Silva Warming Up To Jon Jones Fight

Source: ESPN

It didn’t take long for Anderson Silva to warm up to the idea of a Jon Jones fight after all. Silva told reporters that he is an employee of the UFC so he will consider the Jones fight if that is what the company wants. Its a major turn around from what Silva had told everyone right after his UFC 153 fight with Stephan Bonnar.

Silva was right about one thing though, he won’t be returning to 205 lbs. Silva believes if he were to fight Jones it would be at a catchweight–maybe 190 or 195 lbs. Its not what everyone wanted to hear but at least the idea of Silva fighting Jones is starting to thaw out.

There is definitely one obstacle to the Silva and Jones fight happening though and that is the GSP fight. Silva wants GSP first and rightfully so since that is the bigger fight right now. GSP is a bigger name than Jon Jones even though Jones has been hotter and more active of late.

Everything will depend on GSP. If he is victorious against Carlos Condit, GSP re-establishes himself in the division and sport. The Silva-GSP fight would make sense. If GSP loses, I think Silva moves on to defend his title possibly against Michael Bisping or Chris Weidman mid 2013.

And believe it or not, Jon Jones isn’t ready for Anderson Silva yet. I think Jones and the UFC knows it too. If there were a Silva-Jones fight, it would be late 2013 or early 2014 when Jones has more time in the octagon and refines his striking. Right now he is too raw for Silva’s striking. Look at what Silva did to Belfort and Bonnar compared to what Jones did. There is no comparison right now. Given time though, Jones could catch up.

Anderson Silva Rescues UFC 153, Will Meet Stephan Bonnar

Anderson Silva Rescues UFC 153, Will Meet Stephan Bonnar

Source: Five Ounces Of Pain

Anderson Silva has just done something Jon Jones would not, Silva took a fight on short notice and just stuck it to Jones a little bit. Silva has saved UFC 153 by agreeing to fight Stephan Bonnar. The fight will be at light heavyweight, a division Silva had said he wouldn’t fight at ever since his win over Forrest Griffin.

This act has all kinds of good karma radiating from it. I see everyone benefiting from this move. Silva makes himself look good and Jones look bad all in one act. Stephan Bonnar finally gets the retirement fight he has been looking for. The UFC saves a show, and ultimately, the fans win. Getting to see Silva fight is always a good thing.

The fighter I am happiest for is Stephan Bonnar. He finally gets to out with class. What better way to say goodbye then against possibly the greatest MMA fighter of all time? Several months ago, the guy was holding back tears and saying goodbye on television because he had no fights lined up. Now he gets Anderson Silva.

I don’t think anyone is betting on Bonnar to win but at least he gets say goodbye to the fans in the ring with honor. Bonnar and Griffin are MMA loyalty. Not to mention both will have been able to say they were in the ring with the best–lets hope Bonnar fares better than Griffin.

Two fights have also been confirmed for UFC 153. Glover Teixeira will remain on the card and face fellow Brazilian Fabio Maldonado. I don’t know much about Maldonaldo but I heard he asked for the fight so he gets his wish. He may wish he had not, Teixeira looks like the next big thing at light heavyweight. Big Nog has also been confirmed to face Dave Herman. There is still no news on Wanderlei Silva, Shogun Rua, or Lyoto Machida who were pictured in Machida’s tweet a few days ago.

Update 10/12/2012: All fighters for tomorrow’s UFC 153 card made weight without any issues. Tomorrow’s card will air on PPV at the usual 7pm PT/ 10pm ET. Prelim fights will air on FX.

Daniel Cormier vs Frank Mir Set For November 3 In Oklahoma City

Daniel Cormier vs Frank Mir Set For November 3 In Oklahoma City

Source: MMA Junkie

Daniel Cormier and Frank Mir finally have a date. The two will meet on November 3 in Oklahoma City, OK. Cormier will have a slight home court advantage since he used to wrestle at Oklahoma State University.

The fight which was originally thought to be a title fight will actually be a regular three round affair and serve as Cormier’s last fight in Strikeforce and his entrance into the UFC. The Strikeforce card will air on Showtime at its usual 7pm PT/ 10pm ET.

I know Cormier has previously said he believes Josh Barnett to be a tougher opponent than Frank Mir but I disagree. I think this fight is Cormier’s toughest to date. Mir possesses some dangerous striking skills that Barnett did not have. Barnett seems more predictable in a fight than Mir.

Lately, I wish Mir would be more unpredictable and threaten with takedowns and his BJJ skills to keep his opponent guessing. In this fight though, Mir might not want to do that since Cormier has excellent wrestling skills. Still, you have to threaten it just to keep the other fighter off balance.

Eventually, I would like to see Cormier competing in the light heavyweight division in the UFC. I don’t think Cormier could hang with guys like JDS, Overeem, and even his training partner Cain Velasquez due to his smaller frame. Cormier has said he would love to fight Jon Jones, with the division almost being cleaned out by Jones, I could see Cormier moving to the front of the line there faster than at heavyweight.

Update 9/6/2012: Along with the Cormier vs Mir fight, a middleweight title fight between Luke Rockhold and Loren Larkin has also been confirmed for the Strikeforce card. I am a little puzzled why Jacare Souza was not given the title nod when his last KO was so impressive. Souza’s camp is also puzzled why they were past up for the rematch with Rockhold.

Update 10/12/2012: In a turn of events everyone was expecting, Strikeforce has also cancelled its November 3 card. Daniel Cormier was not even notified of the cancellation and was angered by the news. Strikeforce says it will not have any shows for the rest of the year but will have a huge show to start the new year.

Chael Sonnen Has Sights Set on UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones

Chael Sonnen Has Sights Set on UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones

Source: ESPN

Chael Sonnen is moving up to the UFC light heavyweight division and he has his sights set on the champ Jon Jones. It all started on Tuesday night when Sonnen appeared on UFC Tonight and referenced that he could take Jon Jones’ belt as easily as he could take candy from a “punk kid”.

Jon Jones immediately heard about the comments and fired back about Sonnen fighting like a child against Anderson Silva and not being a man. The two went back and forth on twitter but it was evident that Sonnen has already gotten under Jones’ skin even if Jones told fans he knew what he was doing.

I think both guys know what they are doing. Chael Sonnen is making a splash with his move up in weight. While his fighting may not live up to his words, trash talking with the champ could get him a title shot once Jones cleans out the division. The UFC is always looking for new blood to throw at Jones, why not a guy that can promote himself into any match?

Having Sonnen as a new enemy pretty much unites Jon Jones and Anderson Silva into one camp. That leaves out the possibility of them ever having to fight. Jones knows what he is doing and fighting Anderson Silva isn’t one of them. Maybe Sonnen is just messing with Jones to help out his old Quest teammate in Dan Henderson. I wouldn’t put it past Sonnen to distract Jones and mess with his mind. We’ll see if Jones takes the bait. Or maybe he already has.

Update 10/11/2012: It seems Jon Jones is warming up to the idea of fighting Chael Sonnen. Jones tweeted out that he is considering fighting Sonnen at some point but later said he feels it would be wrong to give Sonnen a shot when he doesn’t deserve it. Sonnen responded by telling Jones that he doesn’t give opportunities, Sonnen takes them.

Gracie Breakdown For UFC 152 With Ed O’Neill

No Comments 25 September 2012

Source: Youtube

You probably didn’t know this but Ed O’Neill has a black belt in BJJ. If you don’t recognize the name, then the face will definitely remind you. Its Al Bundy, the loveable shoe salesman and founder of No Ma’am. Thats right, besides making minimum wage and drinking beer, he was actually doing BJJ for 22 years with the Gracies.

Ed joined Ryron and Renner Gracie to help breakdown UFC 152‘s main event between Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort. The guys give excellent analysis into what both fighters did right and wrong. Belfort nearly pulled out the miracle armbar in the first round exposing a possible hole in Jones’ game. Even Jones admitted after the fight that he needed to work on his BJJ more.

That weakness is sure to be shored up by Jones for his next fight. Even so, Jones showed amazing skill and poise in securing the americana to submit Belfort in the fourth round. Jon Jones is so young and yet already so polished that it is scary to think that the guy is still learning and growing. I fear for the day when he is actually a master of the fight game.

Notes From UFC 152

Source: ESPN

  • Jon Jones may be on the shelf for some time. Jones believes he suffered some nerve damage to his arm from Vitor Belfort’s armbar attempt. Jones will be checked out Sunday morning.
  • Dana White believes Jones has nearly cleaned out the light heavyweight roster. The only possibly matchups left for Jones are Dan Henderson and possibly Chael Sonnen. White said if there was enough support for a Sonnen fight, he would have to make it happen. Interestingly, Jones said he is aiming for Dan Henderson next since they have unfinished business.
  • Jon Jones has quietly amassed a very impressive resume beating legends Shogun Rua, Vitor Belfort, Rampage Jackson and solid candidates in Brandon Vera, Ryan Bader, Stephen Bonnar, and Lyoto Machida. You can start calling him the Bone Collector from now on.
  • Michael Bisping took a unanimous decision victory from Brian Stann but it likely was not impressive enough to garner a title shot against Anderson Silva. White said a fight between Bisping and Silva would be interesting but Chris Weidman stands in the way. If Weidman is victorious against Tim Boetsch, look for Bisping and Weidman to battle for a title shot.
  • Demetrious Johnson looked impressive in becoming the first ever flyweight in the UFC. Up next for Johnson is the winner of John Dodson and Jussier Formiga. Dodson is the winner of TUF season 14. He is 2-0 in the UFC.
  • Cub Swanson has won 3 in a row and looked impressive in knocking out Charles Oliveira. He may be on his way back to getting a title shot but he may have to wait as Frankie Edgar is already in line.
  • Evan Dunham and Jimy Hetes were supposed to be rising stars in the UFC but have flamed out with lackluster performances last night. I am not sure they will ever pan out.

Jon Jones Submits Vitor Belfort To Defend Title, UFC 152 Results

Source: UFC

“Bones” knows MMA. Jon “Bones” Jones received a tougher test from Vitor Belfort than everyone thought he would and still made it look pretty easy at UFC 152 from Toronto, Canada. Jones survived an armbar scare from Belfort in the first round to later submit him with an americana in the fourth round.

Love him or hate him, Jones showed that he was tough in surviving the armbar attempt which really damaged his right arm. Jones said he tried to throw right hand punches which landed but had no power behind them. A visibly hurt Jones showed up to the post fight press conference with his right arm in a sling. He could not get an x-ray so Jones has no idea what kind of injury he suffered.

Even with the hurt right arm, Jones was able to capitalize with his length and wrestling advantages. It also helped that Belfort kept pulling guard to try and pull out another quick submission attempt on Jones. I understood why Belfort thought he could submit Jones but he was not nearly as active enough and should have remained on his feet and attacked him with flurries instead.

In the co-main event of the night, Demetrious Johnson dominated Joseph Benavidez to become the first flyweight champion in UFC history. The fight was not nearly as entertaining as I had projected but it was very technical and fast which is a signature of the flyweight division. Here are the full fight card results:
