Preview Of UFC 158 From Montreal

No Comments 15 March 2013

Check out the countdown show for UFC 158. As always, we only care about the main card which is a welterweight heavy card. GSP will be taking on the awkward but big trash talker Nick Diaz. Johny Hendricks will try to secure his #1 contender status against Carlos Condit in the co-main event. And Jake Ellenberger will try to make a statement against Nate Marquardt.

Clearly, the main event between GSP and Nick Diaz will always take center stage. Rush seems to have a hard time dealing with Nick Diaz outside of the octagon which may or may not translate into the octagon. What was originally expected to be a landslide fight in favor of GSP may not happen after all.

I know most people are expecting GSP to do to Nick Diaz what Benson Henderson did to Nate–maybe even possibly worse. Before all the trash talking, I would have given Nick Diaz no chance of winning the fight but now, I think he has a small one if he can get GSP to fight the Diaz type of fight. Its still a BIG if.

The co-main event of the evening will be the Fight of the Night. Johny Hendricks is desperate for a title shot and he has to get through Carlos Condit to get it. As much as Hendricks is known as a knock out artist, I don’t see him knocking out Condit. Condit is a really tough guy and won’t go out like that.

If anything, I think Condit has the edge in this fight. Hendricks may have the power and wrestling credentials but Condit was the interim champ and has the killer instinct. Condit could easily run from Hendricks the whole fight while still scoring points. It could be just like the Condit-Diaz fight all over again. I certainly hope not.

The Jake Ellenberger vs Nate Marquardt fight could also be a barn burner. Both guys have a lot to prove. Ellenberger feels slighted that Hendricks was taken away from him. Marquardt gets a second chance in the octagon and needs to show everyone that his loss to Tarec Saffiedine was a mistake.

Two guys looking to make a statement will always turn into a good fight for us. Overall, I think the card will be very entertaining and I hope there will be some spectacular knockouts and possibly even an upset. It wouldn’t be so bad to have a trash talking welterweight champ right? We’ll find out Saturday night.

UFC 158′s Johny Hendricks Promised Title Shot With Win Over Carlos Condit

UFC 158's Johny Hendricks Promised Title Shot With Win Over Carlos Condit

We have all heard this one before, Johny Hendricks will get the next title shot should he get past Carlos Condit at UFC 158 on Saturday night. And no, the offer does not extend to Condit if he beats Hendricks. You never know though, crazier things have happened before so the only thing we know for sure is that you have to keep winning.

The sad part for Johny Hendricks though is that I think he might lose to Carlos Condit. Condit has this style of fighting that can be very difficult for aggressive fighters. Think about how Condit was able to be effective against Nick Diaz while back-pedaling the whole time. I can see his fight with Hendricks being that way too.

And it sucks because I think Hendricks has what it takes to really challenge GSP. He has the power in his hands and he has the wrestling credentials. I know its a lot to say Hendricks can beat GSP but he at least has a very good chance to do so. Right now in the welterweight division, who is more qualified thanĀ  Hendricks?

Ultimately its Hendricks’ hands that give him a big chance against GSP. And yet, as far as he has gotten, he still needs to beat Carlos Condit to get to there. I don’t know if Hendricks has anything left in his tank. You can only prove your doubters wrong for so long before you start to break down as well.

This is the fight business. Not many guys go undefeated for years without suffering a defeat. I just hope Hendricks can get past Condit on Saturday so that he gets to take his rightful place against GSP later on this year. The even more tragic thing we forgot about is that Dana White is working on a super fight for Anderson Silva later this year.

This super fight plan may or may not include GSP. If it does include GSP, then even with a victory Saturday night, Hendricks will still have to sit on the shelf and wait until next year to challenge the champ. There are so many obstacles to Hendricks getting a crack at GSP that I feel bad for him.

I know Hendricks is saying all the right things about not looking past Carlos Condit. Its hard to ignore though when the prize is fighting right after you in the main event of the evening, an event he could have been headlining against GSP. Its cliche to say one fight at a time right now, but that is what Hendricks has to do.

Winning is everything for Hendricks. He just has to have faith that he will get this title shot if he gets past Carlos Condit. The fight game is as much mental as it is physical. The answer is simple, keep knocking guys out and, eventually, you’ll get your shot at the champ. The final hurdle may be Condit in Montreal.

UFC 158′s Nick Diaz Trash Talking His Way Under Champ GSP’s Skin

UFC 158's Nick Diaz Trash Talking His Way Under Champ GSP's Skin

There have been so many guys that have tried to trash talk Georges St. Pierre–Matt Serra, BJ Penn, and even Josh Koscheck. None of them were able to get to GSP. For some unknown reason though, Nick Diaz gets to the champ. I guess everyone has their kryptonite and GSP just found his.

The usually calm and professional champ was clearly rattled at the UFC conference call this past Thursday. If you haven’t heard it, you need to do yourself a favor and listen to it. It is the MOST hilarious conference call I have ever heard. When will you ever get another fighter call GSP a “mother-BLEEPER” and GSP call him “an uneducated fool” back?

Not only that, Dana White was dropped from the call so the two guys were just going back and forth without a ref! Truly, you have to check it out. I have never heard GSP so rattled in a call before. GSP is the epitome of a professional and even he couldn’t take it from Diaz any longer.

Originally when this fight was booked, I felt really bad for Johny Hendricks who I felt deserved the title shot more. But after how the conference call went down, I don’t anymore. Hendricks got a raw deal that he can overcome by getting past Carlos Condit. Nick Diaz was the better self-promoter and he got a shot at the champ. You can’t be mad at him for that.

Put Nick Diaz in the same realm as Chael Sonnen. These guys, whether planned or not, are good self promoters and sometimes thats all you need to put yourself in a good position. Sonnen got himself back to back title fights while Diaz got himself a title shot after a 12 month layoff.

The only question now is if the trash talk will affect GSP come fight night. Before all this went down, I pretty much figured GSP would do to Nick what Ben Henderson did to little brother Nate but in a more devastating fashion. Now, I actually think Nick has a good chance to fight his fight and pull off an upset.

Think about it. GSP said Nick Diaz deserves to be beat down and told Dana White he was going to punish him like no man has ever done before. Does that sound like GSP is going to lay and pray Nick Diaz to death? Nope. I think GSP wants to hurt Diaz and wants to finish him.

There are so many fans and critics that have dogged GSP for not finishing fights. I think GSP wants to put on a good performance and do it against Nick Diaz. It may be a big mistake since Diaz can be very dangerous. Either way, I think we are in for a treat Saturday night at UFC 158 when GSP finally looks to put the hurt on his opponent for once.

Super Fight Fever Hits UFC

Super Fight Fever Hits UFC

Super fight fever has officially hit the UFC. And no, its not the super fights we were hoping for (ie Anderson Silva vs GSP or Anderson Silva vs Jon Jones). Nope, we are talking about the featherweights and lightweights. Dana White had to appear on UFC Tonight to clear up some of the issues.

First, lets define a super fight. For MMA, its has to be between current UFC champs. Sorry, Aldo vs Edgar was not a super fight although it was close since Edgar was robbed of a decision against Benson Henderson. Sorry Urijah Faber, you against Edgar wouldn’t be considered one either.

Now lets concentrate on the featherweight title picture. Jose Aldo finally agreed to put his title on the line against Anthony Pettis on August 3–we still don’t know where. Since Pettis doesn’t have a title, this isn’t a super fight. Its just a big fight. Apparently, the assumption was that if Aldo beat Pettis he would also get an immediate shot at the lightweight title.

Dana White cleared up the issue saying that Aldo would be given an immediate title shot at lightweight but if he wins, then he must stay at lightweight permanently and vacate his featherweight title. While I think Aldo is good enough to hold titles in both divisions, there would be no way for him to stay active defending both belts, so good call by White.

I think that all but rules out Aldo moving to lightweight unless he felt it was time for him to leave featherweight since he can’t make the weight-cut any longer. I expect, win or lose, Aldo is going to stay at lightweight until he is ready. The same rule will apply to Pettis as well. If victorious against Aldo, Pettis will have to remain at featherweight.

Yesterday, Benson Henderson also came out saying he would like to challenge GSP to a super fight if he is victorious against Gilbert Melendez in April. Dana White shot down that idea real quick although that would be a super fight. Its understandable though, Henderson wants the big pay days. Who better to challenge than the company’s biggest draw?

Don’t get me wrong, Henderson would be a decent matchup for GSP. He is a huge lightweight and would be a decent sized welterweight. But Henderson just isn’t on GSP’s level. Not only that, Henderson has so many challengers waiting for him at lightweight. Lightweight is probably the most stacked division in the UFC right now. Henderson can’t claim any super fights until he cleans out lightweight first.

It was also revealed that Anderson Silva has been itching for a big fights, namely against GSP. There were rumors Silva said he would be willing to fight GSP at 170 lbs. I highly doubt he could make the weight, but if Silva did, there would be nowhere for GSP to hide. Silva was also heard saying that he would fight Jon Jones at 190 lbs.

I have heard so many things coming out of Silva I don’t know what to believe. At this point, I think he should just go for broke and fight Jon Jones while he is still young and inexperienced at 205 lbs. That way he becomes the first man to hold two divisional belts consecutively. GSP is not ready coming off an injury and has new challengers waiting for him.

Silva and Jones have already cleaned out their respective divisions. Dana White even jumped on board saying he would like to see Silva vs Jones later this year in Madison Square Garden. That fight would be huge and should be the only super fight anyone is talking about at this point.

Rory MacDonald Out Of UFC 158, Johny Hendricks and Nate Marquardt Step Up

Rory MacDonald Out Of UFC 158, Johny Hendricks and Nate Marquardt Step Up

Bad news, the injury bug strikes again. Rory MacDonald had to pull out of UFC 158 with a neck injury. The good news, UFC 158 will remain a welterweight-heavy card. Johny Hendricks will step up to face Carlos Condit and Nate Marquardt will make his return to the octagon against Jake Ellenberger.

Personally, I think these fights match up better than the ones we had before. I know Condit vs MacDonald was a good grudge rematch but it really doesn’t do anything in terms of the welterweight title picture. Condit lost to GSP. You could argue he is still the #1 contender even though I believe Johny Hendricks deserves that title.

While I understand Nick Diaz getting a shot at GSP, what would you do if MacDonald had beaten Condit? He could theoretically become the #1 contender and still refuse to fight his teammate and mentor GSP. So I would much rather have Hendricks fight and beat Condit so that he can make a rightful claim to the #1 contender title and fight GSP later this year.

I am luke-warm about the Marquardt vs Ellenberger fight. This fight would have been more interesting had Marquardt not lost to Tarec Saffiedine last month. I expect a good fight but, even with a win, the winner will need at least two more convincing wins to make any kind of case. Interestingly, Saffiedine turned down a fight with Carlos Condit citing lack of prep time. We know how that goes. Dude is scared.

Rory MacDonald’s injury then becomes a blessing in disguise. If continues to refuse fighting his friend GSP, then relegate him to a top 5 welterweight gate-keeper. MacDonald will still be a beast and can still put on good match ups with the other welterweights in the division. Just off the top of my head Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, and Martin Kampmann.

Maybe the fight that should be made is MacDonald vs Maia. Maia has been really impressive of late rolling over Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story, and Jon Fitch since dropping to welterweight. Who better to test Maia and see if he is legit than Rory MacDonald? A guy who trains with and fights like the old GSP.

Lets not forget Thiago Alves is returning from injury and Jake Shields is dropping back down to welterweight (I really hate Jake Shields, he gets the title of THE MOST BORING FIGHTER IN THE UFC). There will be plenty of fights available for MacDonald. For now the match-ups make sense, UFC 158 is stacked with welterweights, and the MacDonald injury helped out the welterweight title picture.

Notes From Strikeforce Finale

Notes From Strikeforce Finale

Yeah thats Nate Marquardt’s leg after he got leg kicked to death by Tarec Saffiedine. Guys, lets just get one thing straight, if you are fighting a guy with good leg kicks, you have to learn to check them. Ask Urijah Faber if you don’t believe me.

Tarec Saffiedine just guaranteed himself a spot in the UFC with his dominating performance against Nate Marquardt. The relatively unknown welterweight was unsure of his place before the fight, now its a mere formality. I doubt Saffiedine will get an immediate shot at GSP though.

What happened to Nate Marquardt? He was guaranteed a fight with GSP had he gotten past Saffiedine. Did he choke? I am not so sure. Perhaps Marquardt did look past Saffiedine when he should have taken the fight seriously. That happens all the time. It won’t be the first, and it definitely won’t be the last time.

I cannot wait to see DC in the octagon. The guy has been on a tear lately. Yeah I know he beat someone named Dion Staring, but still, the guy is legit. Black Fedor is the hottest thing right now. I hope he moves down to light heavyweight where he can wreak havoc with his wrestling and punching power.

Gegard Mousasi showed why he is such a lethal force at 205 lbs. The guy looks like a little nerd but fights like a beast. He doesn’t has the threatening body type either but when he gets you to the ground, its over. Maybe Mike Kyle helped Mousasi out too by looking like a fish out of water when the fight hit the ground.

I know Dana White doesn’t like Josh Barnett too much. Still, it shouldn’t keep White from hiring Barnett’s services. Barnett, even at his age, is still a threat and can bolster the depth of the UFC’s heavyweight division. He made $250k last night in just under three minutes of fighting. Barnett belongs in the octagon.

Preview Of Final Strikeforce Card Part 2

Preview Of Final Strikeforce Card Part 2

Source: MMA Mania

While its under card is underwhelming, the main card is actually star studded and gets you excited for the future of the UFC if these guys roll into the promotion. The only question is if these guys can hang in the UFC, my guess is that they will be as successful as the WEC fighters were.

Ronaldo Souza vs Ed Herman is an interesting matchup between Strikeforce and the UFC. Souza though is favored for a reason and needs to show he will be a contender in the UFC. Dana White is still unsure of Josh Barnett due to their past relationship in the UFC. I expect Barnett to be there and add depth to the heavyweight roster.

If Barnett can make an impact, Daniel Cormier will be a game changer in the UFC. The guy has a lot of hype behind him and rightfully so. He took the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix out of no where. The guy can fight and he is looking to make some big waves in the UFC. I wish he would drop to light heavyweight but he seems to love food to too much.

Gegard Mousasi vs Mike Kyle will be very interesting. Mousasi is legit and has always been complaining about being overlooked. He really has a chance to put himself on the map with a victory of Mike Kyle. If he wants to be mentioned with Jon Jones, Mousasi needs to start winning and showing everyone what he can do.

Nate Marquardt vs Tarec Saffiedine should be entertaining and also a formality at the same time. Marquardt should take the fight and continue his march towards a unification bout with his friend and training partner GSP. That is a fight I want to see although I would feel bad if he cuts in front of Johny Hendricks.

Update 1/11/2013: All fighters for tomorrow’s final Strikeforce show made weight without any issues. It should be a good and final farewell for the Strikeforce guys as the good ones look forward to a career inside the octagon.

Nate Marquardt Looking Forward To UFC Return, GSP Fight On Horizon

Nate Marquardt Looking Forward To UFC Return, GSP Fight On Horizon

Source: MMA Weekly

One of the guys I can’t wait to see in the octagon again is Nate Marquardt. I know what you are thinking, the same guy that got destroyed by Anderson Silva? Yeah that guy. He is a different fighter now. And he has dropped to welterweight.

I don’t know why, but the weight drop did wonders for Marquardt’s career. He seems stronger and more dynamic. And he is off TRT which seems a little suspicious. Who cares though because he is back.

A major reason why Marquardt has looked so good could be attributed to lesser competition. Lets face it, Strikeforce isn’t exactly the UFC. Marquardt has been fighting scrubs. Its not to say that he won’t fare well in the UFC.

Lets not forget, Marquardt was a title contender even while in the UFC. I have no reason to believe he won’t be a top 5 welterweight as well. And if he is still champ after this weekend’s final Strikeforce card, a GSP fight could be in his future.

Michael Bisping To Get Next Title Shot With Win Over Vitor Belfort At UFC On FX 7

Source: Bleacher Report

There was one guy that was happy to hear that Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre will not be meeting for a super fight next year. That is Michael Bisping who could grab the #1 contender slot with a win over Vitor Belfort at UFC on FX 7 in Brazil next year.

Dana White confirmed that Bisping will probably face Anderson Silva if he can get past Vitor Belfort. Its great news for Bisping to be able to realize his dream of fighting for the title, but Bisping still has to get over a huge hurdle in Belfort.

There is no doubt Belfort will be Bisping’s biggest challenge to date since possibly Dan Henderson. Bisping didn’t fare too well against Henderson, he gets a second chance though to make amends and realize his dreams.

A lot of luck fell into Bisping’s lap when Chris Weidman hurt his shoulder and required surgery. Still, Bisping has to beat an old lion in Belfort to claim his right to face Anderson Silva. If Bisping gets past Belfort, no one will say he is not ready.

St. Pierre vs Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald vs Carlos Condit 2 Set For UFC 158 In Montreal

St. Pierre vs Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald vs Carlos Condit 2 Set For UFC 158 In Montreal

Source: MMA Fighting

Its not a done deal but it looks like Georges St. Pierre will face Nick Diaz at UFC 158 on March 16 in Montreal, Canada. Truthfully, its not the first fight we wanted to see concerning GSP, that would be against Anderson Silva. Its not even the second fight we wanted to see, that would be against Johny Hendricks.

Supposedly, the fight is pending an agreement from Nick Diaz. I don’t think Nick Diaz and his people are foolish enough to turn down the big pay day or have enough honor to turn down the fight. So expect to see GSP return against Nick Diaz in March. Think Ben Henderson vs Nate Diaz but worse for Nick.

Rory MacDonald also received what he asked for, a rematch against Carlos Condit. MacDonald said he was embarrassed by Condit the last time they fought at UFC 115 in June of 2010. There was nothing for MacDonald to be embarrassed about, he was winning the first two rounds before running out of gas. He just wants to avenge his only loss.

The pairing would be perfect if both GSP and MacDonald won, and then faced each other some time later in the year. Of course, both guys are from the same gym and refuse to discuss fighting each other. But I know what Dana White is thinking. He can make it happen. The crazy thing is Rory MacDonald is psycho enough to do it. I would not be surprised.

Update 12/15/2012: Not only has GSP vs Nick Diaz been confirmed for UFC 158, Johny Hendricks vs Jake Ellenberger has also been added. The welterweight heavy card with Johny Hendricks puts him in the bullpen just in case something crazy happens with Nick Diaz again. Knowing that guy, Hendricks has a good chance of filling in.
