With all the recent speculation about who Anderson Silva wants to fight next, maybe someone should have asked him. Well Silva finally sounded off saying regardless of whether Georges St. Pierre wins or loses at UFC 154, Silva wants to fight GSP next.
According to Silva, GSP’s welterweight unification fight with Carlos Condit is meaningless. Win or lose, GSP’s legacy lies in a showdown between the consensus #1 and #2 pound for pound fighters in the world depending on how you rank them.
On a certain level, I agree with Silva. Eventually the two have to fight each other. But I would not go as far as to say GSP’s fight with Carlos Condit is meaningless. If anything, GSP finally has some new challengers to deal with, his legacy as a great champion will depend on how he deals with them after his injury.
For Anderson Silva, the fight seems more pressing to cement his place as the greatest MMA fighter ever. Although I have heard that Silva wants to fight a few more years, the way he keeps pushing this super fight makes me believe he is closer to the end of his career than we all think. Think about it, Silva would rather fight GSP than fend off the young guys in his division.
Ultimately, its up to both fighters to take the fight. Had this fight been on the table one or two years ago I would have jumped at the chance to see it. Now, with both the welterweight and middleweight divisions full of contenders, I would rather see the two champions active and defending their titles. A super fight will still be great, but not as much as it would have been a few years ago.
