And so another lightweight contender is going to make the drop to featherweight. This time its Clay Guida. Guida is on a two fight losing streak and believes size may have been a factor in losses to Benson Henderson and Gray Maynard. Guida believes the drop to featherweight will be beneficial for him.
Guida says he barely cuts weight to make the lightweight limit of 155 lbs so making the drop to featherweight will be easy for him. Think Frankie Edgar here. Both are two undersized lightweights hoping to make a splash when they drop to 145 lbs. I can’t blame Guida for looking to make a case for himself at featherweight since dropping two fights at lightweight.
The issue is that I don’t see his road to a title fight at featherweight being any easier for him. Guida is a good fighter, I just don’t think he has what it takes to beat Frankie Edgar or Jose Aldo. Guida may be able to get top 5 featherweight status but there are pretty good fighters at featherweight as it is.
There are a couple of good matchups for Guida at featherweight right now including Cub Swanson, Erik Koch, Dustin Poirier, and the Korean Zombie. Swanson and Guida are teammates at Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico. Even so, I could see the two fighting at some point. Guida is looking to make his featherweight debut some time in 2013.
